The business community is beginning to embrace social media as a powerful tool. However, it is clearly divided into 2 parts, when it comes to using social media.
The first would have to be the entertainment side of things. There you will find celebrity entrepreneurs, movie and music companies using twitter like crazy. The second is more of the traditional company. Those guys are a bit more careful about entering the arena of social media.
For the latter, its is critical to not find themselves in a place where they are wasting time, and not getting anything worthwhile from engaging in the social media conversation. This would generate low business value and prove rather disappointing.
But, there is a way and there is a light.
1- Engage in a meaningful and impactful conversation for your business. Sharing about your recent furniture purchase may not do much for your legal firm. Pick the right conversations, and have an effective dialog.
2- Start inside first, then go outside. When rolling out a social media strategy, it's important to have a solid internal infrastructure first. Make sure you understand how it works for you, before you bring in your external relationships.
3- Plan your steps smartly. With social media software implementations being so different and Web 2.0-ish today, as opposed to multi-million dollar huge technology project situations, you will need to plan your strategy effectively. Always start with Step 1, which will eventually lead to Step 2.
There is something very 'now' about using social media for business. If your business choses to engage in the social media conversation, make sure it's a meaningful conversation, proof it out internally first, and have a smart plan. Because if you do this right, it will work for you.
